Chinatown Complex was built in 1981 with a food centre on level 2. Most of the hundreds of street side hawker stalls that operated around Chinatown since the 1950s were moved into the food centre then. 226 stalls in all, making Chinatown Complex, Singapore's largest hawker centre - a record she still holds today. That was 37 years ago. The old Chinatown Complex remains the centre of authentic Singapore street food in Chinatown though I wonder how many of the original stalls are still here today.
