Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen @ 35 Baldwin Street Toronto

Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen @ 35 Baldwin Street Toronto

Last Sunday late afternoon, after the rain stopped and clouds cleared, my friends and I went for early dinner on Baldwin Street. We walked by Koh Lipe and was drawn by its emptiness. I know, you would usually want to go for restaurants with a huge line up as that would be a sign of good food.

This is the place, with the huge line ups on a regular day. But, we were there at 4pm and the rain had just stopped so it was a good opportunity for us to finally get to try out this popular spot.

Koh Lipe is the name of a tropical island in southern Thailand and they offer dishes from that region, like Gaeng Ka Ti Sa Tor Nua (stinky bean curry), Choo Chee Pia Too (fried mackerel). Both of which I would like to try on my next visit.

Waxy, crunchy stinky beans is an acquired taste but I am not unfamiliar with it as it is commonly eaten also in Singapore and Malaysia (where I lived up to my teens). Over there, it is known as petai and cooked with hot spices similar to the Thai way.

At the door, you’ll be greeted by an ipad. This somehow felt cold and unwelcoming. But, you will soon understand the need for the ipad. It's for customers to join their virtual line and would come in handy on busy days. Since we got there at off peak hours, we didn’t need to wait and got a table right away.

Once we were greeted by our server, the ice began to melt quickly and all was well. Three of us, we chose to sit outside on their 20 seat patio as they do not have air conditioning indoors.

Our waitress was very friendly, speaking with a Thai accent, she explained to us her favourite dish on the menu. She spoke with such enthusiasm that we just had to order up her recommendation - Luok Jhim.

Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen @ 35 Baldwin Street Toronto

This is a large sharing platter of steamed prawns, green shelled mussels, tilapia, squid, rice noodles, and a green chili spicy sauce. And a side of washed romaine green lettuce. Let’s talk about the components first.

The seafood was fresh and unseasoned (no salt added to the seafood), so as to let its natural seafood brininess shine.

My favourites were the squid and prawns. Squid, not calamari rings, were steamed just right which is the best way to eat squid – tender yet slightly crunchy. The same goes for prawns. It was very thoughtful of them to de-shell the prawns. All we had to do was to assemble each bite to our liking.

Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen @ 35 Baldwin Street Toronto

First a big lettuce leaf, then a bed of steamed rice noodles, then seafood of choice, next drizzle on the green chili sauce. Speaking of which, wow, this is the star of the dish. It’s surprisingly spicy! Its green hue makes the mind think nothing of the sauce, but wait till you try it. It’s quite powerful, packed with flavour and heat.

The main flavours were fresh chilies, fish sauce, lime, and lemongrass. The whole dish is great for a summery fair – healthy, light and refreshing. When I start thinking about recreating a dish at home, you know that I really liked the dish. And this is one of those dishes.

Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen @ 35 Baldwin Street Toronto

Next, we had Pad Thai. It’s my go-to dish whenever I’m at a Thai restaurant outside of Thailand. I don’t know my rationale, but I tend to judge Thai restaurants by how good their Pad Thai is. Maybe it’s because every Thai restaurant serves it (at least that’s true in North American Thai restaurants).

Koh Lipe’s Pad Thai was done to my liking – sweet and savoury. We ordered it with chicken, and medium spice. Next time I order this, I’ll go with extra spice as I couldn’t detect any heat at all. But that’s no problem, there’s plenty more that’s going on in this dish so I didn’t miss the heat.

The rice noodles were chewy and coated with tamarind sauce. Peanuts and bean sprouts added a nice crunch. Perhaps the pieces of chicken in this dish were the only let down. They used chicken breast, so it was rather dry. But still a good dish overall.

Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen @ 35 Baldwin Street Toronto

By the time we finished our meal, streams of customers had arrived and the restaurant was packed like its usual self. Despite the busyness, our waitress was very friendly and thoughtful. She saw that my napkin had fell to the ground and without me asking, came round with new napkins for everyone. That’s good service 👏👏👏

Since we sat outside on the patio, we didn’t get to enjoy the bright décor on the inside of the restaurant.

From my quick peek, every corner of the restaurant is painted with multi-colour murals and has a very playful cheerful feel. There's a tut tut, the ubiquitous scooter taxi in Thailand and rattan (cane) fish traps hanging from the ceiling, reminding us about idyllic Koh Lipe island.

On the second floor of the narrow restaurant, you’ll even find a colourful canoe hanging from the ceiling!

My friend kept telling us to “imagine you are in Thailand”. Koh Lipe Thai Kitchen's food made it easy.

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

Folks who know me personally, know that I love bubble tea one. Though I've cut down on sugary drinks a great deal, I still follow what is trending in the bubble tea world. The craze over the Taiwanese chain, The Alley 鹿角巷 in Singapore and Malaysia caught my attention recently.

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

So, I gladly accepted the invitation to meet at The Alley's new outlet at Cineleisure (at Orchard Road, Singapore) to pre-view The Alley's new flavours Devil & Angel Lychee Lulu before their worldwide launch.

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

All of us are Angels because we all have a sweet side - our best side that stands out and above others.

The Alley's Angel looks pure white with the fruity fragrance and sweet taste of fresh lychee fruit. There were meaty lychee fruit pulp at the bottom of the tall cup of milk tea. We can add The Alley's famous handmade soft chewy tapioca boba, if we like.

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

We all have a dark side - there is a devil in all of us.

The Alley's Devil has the same fruity lychee fragrance and flavour as the Angel, with another layer of subtle sweetish twist that tempts me, like devils do.

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

The best face forward.

I enjoyed both - Angel or Devil? It depends on what I am at the moment 😄

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

Since I am already here, I tried also The Alley's famous classic Brown Sugar Deerioca Milk that took the bubble tea world and Instagram by storm.

No kidding, I saw how people went crazy over Brown Sugar Deerioca on the other side of the globe in Toronto and Waterloo (just last week when I was there). Fun fact: For the first overseas outlet of The Alley, they leapfrogged across the globe and opened it in Ontario, Canada.

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

You know lah, brown sugar works for me whether in cendol, onde onde or Brown Sugar Deerioca.

The Alley Bubble Tea Craze. The Devil is more Interesting while the Angel is a bit too Sweet for me

My most memorable bubble tea today was this Snow Velvet Series cup of White Peach Oolong Tea topped with rich cream cheese. Slurping audibly through that thick savoury cream cheese topping, before I got to the sweetish refreshing oolong tea below. The blend of savoury sweetness is bound to hit the spot with uncles and aunties, and I heard that bubble tea fans of all ages love this too.

Claytan Ceramics Factory Store @ Ayer Hitam Johor.

Eating in restaurants in Singapore and Malaysia, I occasionally come across crockery and tableware by Claytan. I am sure many of you have too. I have a good impression of Claytan products and associate it with fine china. Thanks to buddy Lim JP, I came to Claytan Ceramics Factory Store in Ayer Hitam, Johor for the first time.

Claytan Ceramics Factory Store @ Ayer Hitam Johor.

Claytan Fine China (Tableware) is at 57th Mile, Jalan Johor, Ayer Hitam. It is not far from downtown Ayer Hitam. From its humble beginnings over a century ago making floor tiles and cups for rubber trees (to collect latex), Claytan is today the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for many prestigious fine china brands from around the world. They also have a wide range of fine house brand products from tableware, crockery to sanitary china.

Claytan Ceramics Factory Store @ Ayer Hitam Johor.

The easiest way to get here is by Waze navigation app. Claytan is about 80+ km from downtown Johor Bahru.

My first time at Claytan, what really fascinated me was this large makeshift, zinc roofed shed on the right side of the fine china sales centre.

This is Claytan Ceramics Factory's reject store. Defective crockery and tableware are sold here at huge discounts.

Browsing the huge selection of factory rejects I spotted these beautiful plates.

They were made for Spode ® Woodland © Horse Standardbred series. Spode ® is a premier brand of pottery and homeware founded in England in 1770.

If you can accept blemished tableware, you can get a Spode ® plate for RM6.90.

Truth be told, for most of the reject pieces, my untrained eye couldn't spot the blemish even with a full minute of close inspection. As a world class, trusted OEM, Claytan have very stringent standards of quality control - only perfect pieces are delivered to their clients. For me, I am quite happy to get a 95% - 98% perfect piece of fine china at 80% - 90% discount 😄

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

I had been away from Johor Bahru for 2 months on travels. During this time, JB foodie circles were abuzz about the newly opened Kim Cafe, a Malaysian kopitiam in Taman Johor Jaya (which is a foodie haven).

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

Kim Cafe is a large, spacious, air conditioned kopitiam. Opened just 2 months ago, the kopitiam is already popular among locals.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

Typical of Malaysian kopitiams, Kim Cafe's extensive menu has something for everyone. The essential kopi, kaya toasts and half boiled eggs, local favourites like nasi lemak, mee siam, mee rebus, and Western delights like chicken chops, fish & chips, and spaghetti.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

First things first. Visit any kopitiam must, of course, check out their kopi first. My kopi o siu tai (i.e. black coffee with less sugar) has nice medium body, taste was robust with slight ashy note and a bit bitter which needed to be moderated with sugar. Plenty of caffeine kick in this one but flavour just ok ok for me, lah.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

As I am a wanton mee lover, I opted for wanton mee on this first visit to Kim Cafe.

As the wise Warren Buffett said, "Never test water with both feet."

So, I just ordered the original with spicy flavour (原味, 辣) which comes with a small bowl of soup and wantons.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

The thing is, Johor Bahru also known as "Little Swatow" is famous for Teochew staples like kway teow kia and Teochew kway teow thng but it is also a stronghold for wanton mee (a quintessentially Cantonese dish). Hmm... something for me to find out why.

One of the strengths of JB wanton mee is their house made egg noodles, with each shop offering noodles with their own characteristic bite or personality.

Kim Cafe's egg noodles has a nice al dente tender springy crunchy bite, putting it straight into my list of favourite wanton mee in JB.

One of the things I don't appreciate so much in JB wanton mee is they tend to be rather sparse in tossing sauce and flavours tend to be a little mild (for my palate, lah).

Not so at Kim Cafe. The tossing sauce was drippy, completely wetting every strand of egg noodles. The flavour was robust with the taste of lard and chili rather prominent. I love it.

What's missing were pieces of crispy lard cracklings which would have made the noodles perfect.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

One of my pet peeves about JB wanton mee is most of their char siew are lean and sliced thin, coloured red and electric grilled instead of charcoal roasted. Kim Cafe's is also like that.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

The clear soup had a nice savoury sweet stock bone taste. The wanton, though, were just average - the minced meat filling was tender but the wanton skin was a bit thick. Sesame seed oil flavour was missing.

With one feet finding solid ground under the water, I was ready to put in the other feet.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

For the second round, I asked for the dark sauce version, the way most Johoreans like their wanton mee. I asked for hot spicy as I am Singaporean mah.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

See see see, look at that drippy sauce pooling at the bottom of the plate 😄

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

Same lovely tender springy, crunchy egg noodles. The sauce tastes savoury, lardy, spicy.

Personally, I still prefer the original spicy (原味, 辣) sauce as the savoury dark sauce masked the more subtle layers of flavour from the lard and chili sauce.

To each his/her own, lah.

Kim Cafe. Malaysian Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya

Recommended for you 👍 I left satiated and happy. Everything here for RM20.70. I recommend Kim Cafe's wanton mee. I will be updating this post as I slowly work my way through the kopitiam's extensive menu. If you have been to Kim Cafe, what should I try next?

Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

I've heard about the popular Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam. So, when I spotted this huge banner on my way to Claytan Tableware Factory Store, I quickly pulled over to check out the famous putu bambu as it is one of my favourite traditional Malay snacks.

Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

The putu bambu are freshly made by steaming right there at the shop.

Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

Putu bambu is made of rice flour flavoured with pandan leaves, gula Melaka, and eaten with grated coconut. The rice flour and gula Melaka (palm sugar) are packed into a short bamboo stem and cooked by steaming.

Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

When the rice cake with gula Melaka are cooked, they are pushed out of the bamboo stem with a wooden stick into a tray of freshly grated coconut pulp. The sweet rice cakes are then rolled in the grated coconut which will stick to the sides of the cake.

Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

The putu bambu are then packed into small plastic boxes.

Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

Each packet of putu bambu costs RM4 and there are 6 pieces inside.

Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

We love this freshly made putu bambu. The snack was warm to the touch. The rice flour was soft and light, and had a subtle pandan sweetness and aroma. They are generous with the gula Melaka yet the snack was not overly sweet. The lightly salted grated coconut added another layer of sweetness with a slight balancing saltiness. Oh... everything was oh... so fresh. We enjoyed eating this putu bambu.

Putu Bambu Juriah in Ayer Hitam, Johor

You can take away the putu bambu or eat it there at the shop which also serves staples like nasi campur, nasi Arab etc. Putu bambu and teh terik are a perfect match.

Recommended for you 👍 When you are passing by Ayer Hitam, swing over to Putu Bambu Juriah and get a few packs to eat in the car, on the go.

Siong Tong Gai. Taste of Puchong KL is Now in R & F Mall near JB CIQ

Today's lunch at R & F Mall in JB brought back memories of my life in Kuala Lumpur in the early 2000s. These were dishes and flavours we frequently enjoyed during those wonder years in KL.

Siong Tong Gai. Taste of Puchong KL is Now in R & F Mall near JB CIQ

Newly opened Siong Tong Gai in R & F Mall is spacious, bright, clean and comfortable with air conditioning inside.

Siong Tong Gai. Taste of Puchong KL is Now in R & F Mall near JB CIQ

We had sweet and sour pork, 3 treasures vegetables, salted fish with pork belly, steamed kampung chicken - all good, and the most memorable dish was their signature steamed live patin fish.

Siong Tong Gai. Taste of Puchong KL is Now in R & F Mall near JB CIQ

Siong Tong Gai established in Puchong KL in 2006 prospered on the strength of its signature stock which is used with live fish such as patin, sea bass, grouper, Soon Hock, tilapia, jade perch etc. Siong Tong Gai now have 5 outlets in Malaysia, with another 4 in the pipeline. There will be 2 outlets in JB - this one in R & F Mall, and the next one in Toppen Shopping Centre next to IKEA Tebrau (in Nov 2019).

Siong Tong Gai. Taste of Puchong KL is Now in R & F Mall near JB CIQ

This steamed patin dish is quintessentially KL in my memory, in the same way as KL black Hokkien Mee, KL style char siew etc. I had patin fish very often when I was living in KL.

Siong Tong Gai. Taste of Puchong KL is Now in R & F Mall near JB CIQ

The broth costs RM48++ and we have a choice of live fish. Our live patin costs RM100++.

Oh... the live patin fish come simmering in bubbling hot stock kept warm over a gas table stove. The fatty belly was silky smooth and there was no river fish earthy taste at all - only natural sweetness complemented by the flavoursome broth.

Siong Tong Gai. Taste of Puchong KL is Now in R & F Mall near JB CIQ

The tender white meat was also sweet and had a gently squeaky feel to the bite like fresh crab meat. Very delicious.

Siong Tong Gai's other dishes were good too, even though the steamed patin got most of our attention.

Steamed, tender naturally sweet kampung chicken with subtle herbal stock (price RM49.80++ for half bird).

Twenty year old family run hawker stall serving premium quality lotus leaf rice, and special signature rice ball soup by an ex-restaurant head chef with total 50 years' culinary experience.

Mr Liaw 廖新文 started his hawker stall with his wife 黃月英 after the restaurant where he worked for 30 years closed. At his humble hawker stall, for 20 years Mr Liaw serves he ye fan 荷叶饭 (lotus leaf rice), tang yuan 湯圓 (rice ball soup), and a signature savoury tang yuan.

When Mr Liaw's son 廖宥鈞, who is a hotel dim sum chef joined the stall, he rebranded it Dr Q (even though the reserved Mr Liaw was initially reluctant).

For his he ye fan 荷叶饭, Dr Q blend two different types of glutinous rice to give it a layered texture. To the steamed glutinous rice, Dr Q add braised pork belly, yam and carrot cubes, premium quality ginkgo nuts, sauteed squid and mushroom which are all wrapped in fresh lotus leaves. The rice and leaf bundles are then cooked by steaming in bamboo baskets, infusing the rice with flavours and aromas from the ingredients as well as the lotus leaves. Dr Q serves restaurant quality he ye fan at hawker prices.

Dr Q's rice balls are made with a blend 4 types of rice so they are tender yet have a light springy chew to the bite. The rice balls also have the homely taste of rice. The rice balls served in savoury sweet pork soup are filled with minced pork, sesame paste or groundnut paste. Dr Q also have a sweet soup dessert version. These are nice but the main draw are Dr Q's unique signature rice balls.

Dr Q's signature rice balls 客家紅白鹹湯圓 come in a soup. At the bottom are fresh leafy greens, with springy red and white rice balls laid above it, and on top Dr Q scoop in a spoonful of their special garnish. The savoury garnish is made with 6 ingredients such as leek, mushroom, dried shrimps etc stir fried and stewed with a blend of oils, including rendered Berkshire black pig lard and chicken fat.

Dr Q fans are touched by the Liaw family's sincerity and dedication in staying faithful to the tedious traditional recipe to give customers the old school textures, aromas, feel and flavours.

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang. The Vanishing Art of Hand Making String Hoppers

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

I was relaxing over my kopi at Kluang Rail Coffee when Evonne rounded up all of us, piled us into the van and rushed us to the Monday only farmers' market, Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu in Kluang (beside Kluang bus terminal).

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

On Mondays, farmers and hawkers set up stalls at the pasar tani (farmers' market) to sell their vegetables, fruits and cooked food. There are some 100 stalls at the market, so if you are in Kluang on a Monday morning, be sure to check this out.

The pasar tani is in the shadow of the peaks of the Titiwangsa Range visible in the background including Gunung Lambak, known to old aviators as Betty's Boobs.

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

In the old days, when aviators rely a lot on Mark 1 eyeballs to find their destinations, the sight of Betty's Boobs tells them that they have arrived at the Royal Air Force Base in Kluang.

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

No lah, Evonne didn't rushed us here in the morning to gawk at Betty's Boobs, majestic they may be. She wanted to show us a special stall serving her favourite putu mayam, a sort of flat rice noodle pancake 😄 (Known as string hoppers in English.)

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

For decades, Abdul Wahab and wife Aiyshah made putu mayam the old way by pressing rice flour dough through a perforated wooden mould. Pressing firmly on the rice dough, it emerges through the holes as strands like bee hoon (rice vermicelli) which is laid on upturned bamboo baskets.

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

The putu mayam is cooked by steaming for 5 - 10 minutes.

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

Putu Mayam is eaten with grated coconut and brown sugar. The snack originated in Tamil Naidu in southern India (where it is known as idiyappam), making its way south through migration to Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

I like the soft subtle spring in the bite, slight sweetness and fleeting rice aroma of Encik Abdul Wahab's putu mayam. The sweet grated coconut and brown sugar add sweetness and texture to the simple snack.

Putu Mayam Wahab @ Pasar Tani Kampung Malayu, Kluang.

Recommended for you 👍 Putu Mayam Abdul Wahab is one of the last stalls in Malaysia and Singapore which still hand make the traditional snack on site. Don't miss it, if you are in Kluang for food trail.

Fendy Burger. Best Ramly Burger in Kluang Johor

Many of us in Singapore and Malaysia grew up with Ramly burgers which are synonymous with street burgers here. On our way back to the hotel after a sumptuous dinner in Kluang, our host Jit Pang instinctively pulled over when our van passed Fendy Burger.

Our host Lim Jit Pang is the grandson of the founder of the legendary Kluang Rail Coffee (established 1938). The Lim clan is well established in F & B in Kluang town.

Whenever the Lim clan get together, especially when family return from overseas, they will often round up the evening at Fendy Burger. They even gather here after Chinese New Year Eve reunion dinner 😄 Jit Pang wanted us to taste his family's favourite street burger.

Youthful looking Encik Fendy founded his burger stand 34 years ago in 1985. Today, Fendy Burger is the undisputed, most famous street burger in Kluang, if not in Johor. You can order your burgers in Mandarin as Fendy is more fluent in the language than me 😄

Fendy Burger. Best Ramly Burger in Kluang Johor

Like all Ramly burger stands, Fendy uses chicken and beef patties from Ramly but customises them to create his signature burgers.

Fendy uses only double yolk eggs for his fried egg - something I have not seen before.

Fendy Burger is generous with their greens - lettuce, cucumber, raw onion etc.

Each street burger stand have their own mayo blend, spicy and sweet sauces, and salty spicy powders.

Jit Pang got this burger for us to share - I couldn't remember which version it was, but it tasted nice. Nice savoury tangy spicy flavours with underlying sweetness, beefiness and egginess. The fresh raw vegetables added crunch and balancing green taste to the burger. The soft puffy bun which collapsed when we pressed it with our greasy fingers, tasted sweetish. Indeed, it's a nice street burger.

Recommended for you 👍 If you touch your heart and Ramly burgers move you more than the likes of Shake Shack or In-N-Out Burger, then make sure to check out Fendy Burger when you are in Kluang.

Truth be told, I've eaten at Shake Shack in New York City and Dubai, but my heart still belongs to the humble street burger, especially well made ones like Fendy Burger.

Charcoal Fried KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

Black gooey KL style Hokkien mee has a strong following in JB and Singapore, but good ones are rather rare here. So, whenever a KL Hokkien mee stall appears, social media will be abuzz with feedback on the noodles. The new KL Hokkien mee stall at Hoa Kee coffee shop in Taman Gaya, Ulu Tiram has been getting good response from JB foodies.

KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

The stall doesn't have a name, just a sign saying KL Charcoal Fried Hokkien Mee. Stall holder Mr. 鍾 hails from Kuala Lumpur and had been frying Hokkien mee since he was a teen. He worked for many years in the popular Sentul Ah Yap Hokkien Mee (he mentioned the Damansara Utama outlet which has closed) in Kuala Lumpur.

We made our order and was given this number tag to wait at our table.

KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

Mr. 鍾 was very busy working two charcoal stoves at the same time. From our table, we could hear non stop clanging as Mr. 鍾 worked the iron wok and noodles vigorously with his steel spatula. This is the unmistakable "music" we hear at KL Hokkien mee stalls.

KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

Our piping hot noodles arrived after about 20 minutes. Our two person serving costs RM18.

KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

It's the wet type of KL Hokkien mee with the noodles smothered in thick gooey dark sauce. The fat noodles (tai lok meen) were very slick, well greased with sauce and lard. The noodles were a bit too soft for my liking but they were very flavoursome. The savoury salty taste was robust with good depth of flavours. The fat yellow noodles provided a bit of sweet taste.

KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

The generous amounts of lard and lard cracklings complemented the savoury salty sauce and sweet noodles well, so this KL Hokkien mee has a winning taste profile.

I like it.

KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

There were prawns, fish cake slices, pork slices, cabbage, and chye sim in the noodles which added texture but didn't really contribute much to the flavour which is dominated by the dark sauce and lard. No pork liver, chicken liver, nor squid heads.

KL Hokkien Mee in Johor Bahru @ Hoa Kee Kopitiam Coffee Shop

The savoury salty spicy sambal chili. We didn't use it much. (We also had fried rice from another stall which came with cut raw chili padi, which we enjoyed more with the Hokkien mee 😄 )

We happily finished the large plate of Hokkien mee because of the flavourful sauce.

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ The Best Oysters in Toronto Queen St. West

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ Toronto Queen St. West

A dear friend of ours is visiting from Tokyo, Japan. She requested for Canadian oysters for dinner and her wish was granted 😄

Where else but Oyster Boy comes to mind immediately, when one thinks of oysters in Toronto.

Although I have never been to Oyster Boy, I’ve heard many great things about this tiny restaurant. So I was very excited about what’s to come. One of the reasons why I never managed to eat here in the past, is because they only open for dinner for most of the week and if you don’t have a reservation, chances are you won’t be able to get in.

We did not make a reservation today. Buttttt, we got there on a Sunday at 4pm, we were lucky and managed to squeeze in. We were a group of 7, a very large group by Oyster Boy’s standards as this is a very narrow and long restaurant that can only fit about 40 people. Even at 4pm, the place was packed and we had to sit on separate tables. Not ideal.

After taking our orders, a few other tables had cleared up, and our thoughtful waitress asked if we wanted to move to the long table at the back of the restaurant. We jumped at the opportunity! So good to be able to sit together as one!

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ Toronto Queen St. West

Okay, let’s talk about the food because that’s why you’re reading this. Of course, we ordered fresh oysters. At Oyster Boy, they serve all and only Canadian oysters, freshly shucked upon order.

Before moving to the long table, I was sitting right at the bar counter and was right in front of the bartender/oyster shucker. It was so exciting to be so close to the action! He was entertaining guests, answering their questions about oysters, demonstrating how to shuck an oyster, taking orders from us, collecting payment from others…he was a true multitasker! Someone give him a trophy for the most hardworking employee!

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ Toronto Queen St. West

The oysters were served to us on a bed of crushed ice, alongside lemon wedges, grated horseradish, and 3 kinds of sauces (seafood cocktail sauce, pickled onion, and a hot chili sauce). My friends were impressed with how fresh and plump the oysters were. Amongst us, we ordered up 3 dozen oysters. You can either choose which kinds of oysters you want, or you can let the oyster experts compose an oyster symphony for you. We let the experts impress us, and indeed, they did beyond our expectations 😄

Our platter came with oysters representing all corners of Canada, like Prince Edward Island, British Colombia, Nova Scotia…

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ Toronto Queen St. West

Other than oysters, they also have a variety of other seafood dishes. I went for the bouillabaisse, an impressive seafood stew. A large plate of clams, mussels, shrimps, large scallops, rainbow trout, pearl onions, potatoes, all in a savoury sweet-smelling saffron tomato broth. Delicious.

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ Toronto Queen St. West

Each individual piece of seafood was cooked just right. My favourite was the 3 large scallops – tender, yet had a nice bounce; sweet, yet gently briny like the sea. I highly recommend this dish.

It came with fresh crusty French bread which I used to mop up every drop of the saffron tomato broth 😋 A friend who arrived late saw my bouillabaisse and ordered one for herself too. I’m an influencer 😂

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ Toronto Queen St. West

Other dishes that my friends ate included onion rings… the table next to us ordered these and we were in awe with the size of these rings. They were so friendly and offered to share their onion rings with us! Welcome to Canada 🍁

We weren’t going to steal their rings, so we ordered a plate too! Indeed, these rings were massive! They were as big as large donuts. My friends liked the ratio of onion to batter. It came with a selection of sauces, we had their chipotle mayo, which came served to us in an oyster shell.

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ Toronto Queen St. West

Lobster fries…these were interesting too. We thought that lobster fries meant potato fries with some chunks of lobster. Nope. We obviously didn’t read the description at all 😂 These were actually tiny ribbons of lobster meat, breaded and deep-fried! Not sure I tasted the lobster as it was over-battered in my opinion. But still, give it a try as you’ll never get this anywhere else.

Oyster Boy - Mollusks for the Masses @ Toronto Queen St. West

Steamed mussels in white wine broth… These looked good, I didn’t get to taste any, but my friends loved it. I imagine this to be just as fresh and good as my seafood stew.

Recommended for you 👍 Everything tasted so good. No wonder this place is always packed. The service here is good, attentive and accommodating. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about oysters. Overall, a satisfying meal. I’ll be back for more and I want front row seats at the oyster symphony orchestra.

Best Prawn Crackers (Cucur Udang) in JB Series 2. Home Based in Johor Jaya 住家手工式 炸虾饼

Seetoh wanted to try the crispy prawn cracker stall I shared in my blog but the coffee shop was closed when we got there (in Johor Jaya). So, I quickly dialled up my memory, and remembered that JB foodie buddy Keng Chong shared about a home based stall at #1, Jalan Keembong 38 (which is just around the corner in Taman Johor Jaya). Everyone agreed to try our luck there.

Best Prawn Crackers (Cucur Udang) in JB Series 2. Home Based in Johor Jaya 住家手工式 炸虾饼

Finding the house wasn't hard. Just set WAZE to "No.1, Jalan Keembong 38" and it will take us to the doorstep.

Best Prawn Crackers (Cucur Udang) in JB Series 2. Home Based in Johor Jaya 住家手工式 炸虾饼

When we asked the gentleman in the house if we could have some fried prawn crackers, he replied "Have you called in to book?"

There was a second of pregnant pause and silence.

It was suddenly so quiet, maybe he heard my heart sank. Perhaps, it was our tired and hungry look.

Then, the magic words.

"How many do you want?"

😄😃😀😆

Best Prawn Crackers (Cucur Udang) in JB Series 2. Home Based in Johor Jaya 住家手工式 炸虾饼

There were two types of prawn crackers available - all prawns only and prawns with chives. The prawn crackers were pre-fried, and finished in hot oil just before serving.

In order not to impose on the stall owners' generosity (as we had not pre-booked), we just ordered one of each type for each of us.

Best Prawn Crackers (Cucur Udang) in JB Series 2. Home Based in Johor Jaya 住家手工式 炸虾饼

We had 3 pieces of all prawns, and 3 pieces of prawns with chives. Everything here for RM13.

Best Prawn Crackers (Cucur Udang) in JB Series 2. Home Based in Johor Jaya 住家手工式 炸虾饼

It's a flat dough base completely topped with fresh pinkie size soft shelled white prawns 白蝦. The dough base was just slightly crisp and it was just thick enough to hold all 20 something white prawns together.

The soft shelled prawns were soft and moist with subtle natural prawn sweetness. The base was tasty - gently savoury sweet, though it was not very crispy like average prawn crackers (i.e. those with less prawns and thinner dough base).

Oops... I forgot to take a closeup shot of the prawns with chives cracker as the all prawns crackers got all my attention. I remember it was slightly crisp and quite doughy.

Best Prawn Crackers (Cucur Udang) in JB Series 2. Home Based in Johor Jaya 住家手工式 炸虾饼

The prawn crackers are eaten with house made chili sauce which has a sharp spicy hot sting layered with a bit of lime sourness. It made the prawn crackers taste better by heightening the sensitivity of our taste buds to discern the subtle natural sweetness of the white prawns.

Atu Sesame Oil Chicken - Best in Taipei 阿圖麻油雞

Well loved 40 plus year old family run sesame oil chicken soup stall with lots of loyal fans young and old who crave the flavourful comforting, heart and body warming, nourishing dish.

Restaurant nameAtu Sesame Oil Chicken 阿圖麻油雞
AddressNo. 39, Liaoning Street, Zhongshan District, Taipei City, Taiwan 104

Nearest MRT station: Nanjing Fuxing 南京復興站
Tel+886 2 2751 5180
Hours: 11:00am - 11:00pm (Sunday closed)

The popular sesame oil chicken stall is founded by friendly Uncle Atu 阿圖 and wife who have 5 children and 5 adopted girls whom they raised as their own. All are involved in the family business since their childhood. Uncle Atu, wife and elder daughter run the original stall near Nanjing Fuxing station 南京復興站 while daughters run the branches.

Atu and family chop chunks of fresh free range chicken, stir fry them with sesame oil and julienned old ginger till the extracted flavours are infused into the chicken meat. Uncle Atu uses only 6.5 month old free range chicken as they are meatier and more flavoursome. The dish is then doused with rice wine and black vinegar, and stir fried some more before adding chicken soup and black mushrooms.

When the chunks of chicken meat are cooked by boiling, they are removed from the pot of stock and rested to prevent overcooking (which would toughen the meat and leech out the natural flavours). The chicken soup is kept simmering in a large pot of stock made with at least 4 whole chicken and mushroom for flavour.

When there is an order, the rested stir fried chicken chunks are added into and finished by boiling in small pots of the sesame oil chicken soup. Customers can order fresh pork liver, kidney and heart slices which will be blanched and expertly cooked in the sesame oil chicken soup to just the right texture.

For carbs, customers can order mee sua (rice noodles). Fans love the juicy tenderness and natural sweetness of the chicken. They like the rich aroma and depth of flavours of the sesame oil, vinegar and rice wine chicken soup. The pork liver, kidney and heart are cooked perfectly, retaining their subtle springy crunch. The subtly savoury mee sua is also well liked.

MG 83 Cafe in Kluang. Delicious Comfort Dishes in the Heart of Bat Town

True blue Kluangite, Sarah brought us to MG 83 Cafe 糖水美食馆, one of her favourite local delights hangouts in downtown Kluang.

MG 83 Cafe is a typical Malaysian style, simple eatery. It is simply furnished but clean and comfortable with air conditioning.

Sarah started us off with curry mee, mee hoon kueh and fish ball soup. They were all good, above average. The curry flavours were robust. The springy mee hoon kueh dough were hand kneaded and hand torn. The fish balls were hand made with fresh fish. Everything was faithful to tradition and taste good.

When this pale looking "yellow rice wine chicken mee sua" arrived on our table, we were already quite full from all the eating before.

MG 83 Cafe in Kluang. Delicious Comfort Dishes in the Heart of Bat Town

One sip of this uninteresting looking soup and we all sat up in full attention. The thick, full bodied soup has the most robust and well balanced savoury sweet tangy (ginger) spicy flavours that I have tasted in a "rice wine chicken soup".

The chunks of fresh chicken were tender and juicy with natural sweetness.

The heavy gauge mee sua (rice noodles) had really nice tender firmness to the bite.

I like everything that I tried today and the most memorable was the rice wine chicken mee sua which I would specially go back to MG 83 Cafe for.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor. Korean Cuisine is not only BBQ

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

We met for lunch at Restoran Teumsae, a Korean owned family restaurant at Citrine Hub in Sunway Iskandar, Nusajaya Johor. I like the dishes we tried, especially the ginseng chicken soup, deep fried gimbap (rice roll) and jajangmyeon (noodles).

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

Restoran Teumsae is simple, clean, bright and comfortable inside with furnishings well spaced out.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

We had a variety of staple, familiar Korean style rice, noodle and soup dishes. While most Korean themed restaurants in JB are almost inevitably Korean BBQ joints, Restoran Teumsae focus on homely, Korean comfort dishes.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

A Korean meal always starts with banchan (small side dishes / appetisers). It's basic banchan fare here at Restoran Teumsae, though quite tasty. I especially enjoyed that fermented black beans which have a firm stiff tender texture and savoury sweet flavour.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

I am a fan of Korean style spicy tofu stew (doenjang-jjigae) and would order it whenever it is available (price RM24). Served in a heavy pot that kept the stew warm throughout most of the meal, this was loaded with savoury tangy spicy flavours from the soft tofu, vegetables, mushroom, la la clams and even a flower crab (which I love in soups for the crustacean flavour it adds).

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

Gamjatang, Korean style bak kut teh of sorts (price RM35). It's meaty pork spine bone, cabbage and potato in a savoury spicy tangy soup. A couple of the dish's key ingredients, perilla seeds and leaves were absent as these are not available in Johor Bahru. Bean sprouts were also missing.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

Hot stone bibimbap (price RM24). Korean rice bowl with beef, vegetables and egg.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

Cold chewy noodles with vegetables and savoury spicy sauce (price RM25).

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

The savoury spicy noodles were extra springy to the bite. The vegetables added layers of crunch and flavours to the cold noodle dish.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

Jajangmyeon - noodles smothered in a dark almost black gooey sauce (price RM24).

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

The heavy gauge noodle were slurpy smooth and had a nice interesting tender bouncy spring to the bite. The dark sauce was savoury with a fruity kind of sweetness. The pieces of pork in the bowl also had a gentle spring to the bite and were well infused with the sauce's savoury fruity sweet flavours.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

Restoran Teumsae serves a good range of gimbap (rice rolls wrapped with dried seaweed similar to sushi). We picked the one with crispy fried prawns (RM18).

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

The rice rolls were well made, tightly packed with well balanced flavours in a mix of tender, crisp and crunchy textures. There was just the right amount of clean tasting sweet boiled rice i.e. not too much. It is easy to overindulge in these and blissfully burst our sugar quota. I like to have more of these 😄

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

I like Restoran Teumsae's rendition of the quintessentially Korean, ginseng chicken soup (samgye-tang). Price RM45.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

I like it that at Restoran Teumsae, they use the whole bird, pack glutinous rice in the cavity, and cook it all in soup with ginseng, red dates, etc. The whole bird and the soft rice were well infused with exquisite savoury sweetness with underlying floral kind of ginseng root flavour and aroma.

The ginseng chicken came with a dish of dipping salt but I didn't use it as I like the taste as it is.

Restoran Teumsae. Korean Family Restaurant in Nusajaya Johor

Simple, clean, comfortable environment. Good range of Korean dishes. Reasonable prices. I would come back for their ginseng chicken, jajangmyeon, gimbap, tofu stew as well as other dishes which I have not tried yet.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

My friend Puan Chong who lives around Kulai / Senai often suggests to me nice places to eat there, which she has tried with her family. Last night, she invited me to join her family at Kulai Wengyaoji 古來甕窯雞.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

If you are like me who is a fan of Taiwanese food shows, you would have seen episodes about 甕窯雞 wengyaoji which is marinated chicken baked in wood fired clay or brick ovens. The hub of wengyaoji in Taiwan is in Yilan County about 1 hour drive from Taipei City - there are dozens of wengyaoji restaurants in Yilan. Taipei City folks like to take the scenic leisurely drive to rural Yilan for the famous baked chicken - it's a popular day trip / excursion for city folks.

I am excited to visit Kulai Wengyaoji as now we can be just like fortunate Taipei folks by taking the 1 to 1.5 hour drive from Singapore / Johor Bahru to rural Kulai for chicken baked in wood fired brick ovens.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

Kulai Wengyaoji is run by Mr. Liew 刘浚发 and his family. Mr. Liew's family makes clay / cement / brick kitchen stoves for village homes around Kulai / Senai - a business started by his father. Mr. Liew who worked outstation for decades, retired at age 56 and returned to his family home to look after his elderly mother. Mr. Liew loves to cook for family and friends. Inspired by the wengyaoji restaurants he saw in Taiwan, Mr. Liew built his own brick oven at his family home in Kulai.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

At first, Mr. Liew only invited his family and friends to enjoy the chicken, pork ribs, pork knuckles baked in his wood fired brick oven. Soon, word got around about the baked chicken and Mr. Liew's special brick oven. Many townsfolk in Kulai and Senai want a chance to taste it.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

So, Mr. Liew opened his home based restaurant to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. To this day, eating at Kulai Wengyaoji is by reservation only by calling ☎ 016 777 7760.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

Over twenty tables, all full. It looked like the whole town came down for dinner this Saturday night.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

First dish to arrive was salted baked red tilapia. The fish came encased in a pod of salt. Meryl did the honours to break open the salt pod to reveal the plump tilapia fish inside.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

The tilapia fish was meaty and soft. Its subtle natural sweetness was complemented by gentle savoury saltiness from the salt. There was no fishy taste or smell from the fresh tilapia.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

Next, the signature wengyaoji or baked chicken (price RM48). The baked chicken had a slight crisp outside. The inside was tender. Most of the savoury sweet flavour was on the skin, while the inside had a bit of natural chicken sweetness.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

During my visit, Mr. Liew's younger brother 刘振发 did most of the cooking with the brick oven.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

Nearly three foot long baked pork ribs (price RM68 - top value for money).

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

I like the savoury sweet BBQ sauce which enveloped the outside and infused the fibres of the rib. I could taste a bit of smokey flavour outside and the natural porky sweetness in the meat which I like. This BBQ ribs would be perfect if there was a little more fat and moistness in the ribs.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

There were also several non baked dishes like this battered fried sea bass (price RM55).

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

Nice crispy fried battered fish meat and skin. The mild savoury sweet batter allows us to take a bit of the natural fish sweetness. Eat with the savoury sourish spicy dip.

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

I like this Ikan Patin stewed in soy sauce with julienned ginger, chili pepper and chives (price RM50).

Kulai Wengyaoji. Now we can have Taiwan Style Wood Fired Brick Oven Baked Dishes in Johor 古來甕窯雞

I always love Ikan Patin dishes and this one by wengyaoji was really good. The meaty white flesh's natural sweetness was complemented by slight savouriness of the soy sauce. The ginger and chili pepper added a bit of mild heat. We especially enjoyed the silky smooth fat found around the belly. There was no earthly taste in the fish.

Recommended for you 👍 The food is nice. Prices are reasonable. But, it is the kampung ambiance and wood fired brick oven that makes Kulai Wengyaoji special. If you are going to Kulai for a food trail, this is a great dinner spot to round up your itinerary.

Thank you Puan Chong for your recommendation and dinner with your family.

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

Many people go to Kluang for mooncakes and also sio bak (siew yok or roast pork). I've tried a few roast pork places in Kluang but had always wanted to visit the famous Hai Kee meat merchant 海记肉商 which opens only at night till early morning.

Evvone Lyn Lee. Lim Jit Pang

I finally got the chance, thanks to Evonne and Jit Pang who host Jalan2 Makan2 Masak2 trips to Kluang. Jit Pang is the grandson of the founder of the legendary Kluang Rail Coffee. Evonne also a Kluangite is the co-author (with Sarah Lee) of award winning book Asian Pies. Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

Hai Kee meat merchant is a butchery processing pigs from nearby farms. The animals come in small open trucks, fresh, still warm and in rigor mortis, never chilled.

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

Hai Kee butcher shop is located at the intersection of Jalan Tan Kim Sek and Jalan Haji Manap Nordin. Finding Hai Kee is easy - just set your WAZE App to Yuan Fatt Bakery. The famous "Shanghai" mooncake shop is just across Jalan Haji Manap Nordin from Hai Kee.

The uber fresh pork are processed, prepared and roasted right there at the large shop.

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

We were here at 9pm when pigs were still arriving and the first batches of roast pork were already ready for sale.

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

The freshly roasted golden brown slabs of sio bak and reddish ropes of char siew are chopped and sold on order by weight.

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

Jit Pang bought a pack each of char siew and sio bak for us to taste.

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

We took the char siew and sio bak to the kopitiam (coffee shop) across the street to eat it with beer. The kopitiam has no food stalls and serves only drinks, so they warmly welcome us to eat our roast meats there 😄

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

Smart lah. We ended up spending more on beers than on char siew and sio bak together 😃

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

Jit Pang bought a mix of roasted pork jowl and pork belly. The default is to chop the roasts into small pieces (pork belly) and strips like fries (pork jowl).

The meat was tender and the fats juicy. I especially like the crackly crispness of the freshly roasted pork skin. I also like it that the sio bak tasted just mildly savoury so that we can taste the fresh pork's natural sweetness. (All the other sio bak in Kluang that I have tasted were more savoury/ salty than here at Hai Kee. In fact, slightly too salty for my taste buds.)

(I came back on my own a second time and double confirmed that the default cut is small pieces. If you are like me who prefer your sio bak in large chunks, please tell the butcher.)

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

Though I am not a big fan of reddish char siew, I actually enjoyed Hai Kee's rendition as the tender meat had well balanced savoury sweet flavours. Not as deep and intense in savoury sweetness as my favourite KL version though.

Hai Kee. Best Roast Pork Meat in Kluang Series 海记肉商

Recommended for hard core sio bak lovers 👈 click The scene of freshly slaughtered animals at the butchery is not for everyone. But, if you can take that, the butchery is an interesting place for sio bak lovers. Hai Kee's sio bak is nice as its savoury sweet flavours are mild, allowing us to taste the natural porcine sweetness in the tender juicy pork belly. The crackly skin has a nice crispy crunch. Ask for the jowl to get greater skin to meat and fat ratio. If you are having pork belly, ask for big chunky cuts.

Restoran Tan Ching Hing Hawker Food Centre. Ah Fu Satay in Kluang Johor 阿福沙爹.良记海鲜铁板烧

Our Kluang buddy Jit Pang brought us to Restoran Tan Ching Hing in Kluang for dinner.

Restoran Tan Ching Hing is actually a hawker centre with around 15 food stalls - it is one of the most popular dinner and supper hangouts of Kluang townsfolk.

Locals usually call this place Ah Fu Satay as the owner of this hawker centre Tan Ching Hing started out in 1991 running Ah Fu Satay stall.

There were 10 of us, so we tried a bit of most things served at Restoran Tan Ching Hing (and we were continuing to Fendy Burger and Hai Kee roast pork right after this 😂).

Crispy fried pork and chicken feet. Encased in batter blended with nam yue (fermented bean paste), the crispy outside had a nice savoury flavour and subtle fermented bean curd aroma.

The fried chicken wings won over all of us - crispy outside, tender and juicy inside. Savoury nam yue marination at just the right level of intensity for most of us. We can taste a bit of natural chicky sweetness in the tender, juicy meat.

The food's all quite nice but I found myself drawn to the ikan bakar at the front, left hand side, corner stall 良记海鲜铁板烧. Uncle Liang 良 is a study in focus, concentrating deeply when he grills his fish, squid or vegetables on a banana leaf with pungent hot spices.

Restoran Tan Ching Hing Hawker Food Centre. Ah Fu Satay in Kluang Johor 阿福沙爹.良记海鲜铁板烧

When trying out ikan bakar stalls, I would check out the freshness of the fish first. I like it that Uncle Liang's stingrays are fresh and he strips off the skin (which is not often done at other ikan bakar stalls).

Restoran Tan Ching Hing Hawker Food Centre. Ah Fu Satay in Kluang Johor 阿福沙爹.良记海鲜铁板烧

Next, I would take a look at the sambal chili sauce. Uniquely, Uncle Liang uses a blend of curry powders and sauces from squeeze bottles.

Restoran Tan Ching Hing Hawker Food Centre. Ah Fu Satay in Kluang Johor 阿福沙爹.良记海鲜铁板烧

Again, uniquely, instead of grilling the fish on both sides by flipping it over, Uncle Liang skilfully wraps the fish with banana leaves.

Restoran Tan Ching Hing Hawker Food Centre. Ah Fu Satay in Kluang Johor 阿福沙爹.良记海鲜铁板烧

The fish and spices are grilled and baked in a bundle with folded banana leaves. This reminds me of the Portuguese style of grilled fish e.g. at Malacca's Portuguese village except that the fish are wrapped in aluminium foil there.

Uncle Liang working quietly and earnestly behind the grill gave me the first impression that he might be a little annoyed at the uninvited inquisitiveness of this out of town stranger. But, once he had done cooking, Uncle Liang was very warm and chatty. He's is a very friendly professional 😄

The unwrapped grilled and baked fish came out warm and blanketed with drippy spicy looking sauce. We dressed it with the calamansi provided.

Let's dig in. With the skin removed, the stingray was oh.... so soft and juicy. It was well infused with the tangy spicy savoury sauce as the flavours can penetrate the white flesh (without the skin). I was able to taste the natural sweetness of the fresh fish meat.

We also had grilled squid.

Gandhi Indian Cuisine. Gandhi Roti. List of Best East Indian in Toronto

Gandhi Indian Cuisine. Gandhi Roti. List of Best East Indian in Toronto

Many things change on Queen Street West. Shops and restaurants that you frequent could very well be replaced the next moment due to high rent and competition. But one thing stays the same.

For more than 25 years, Gandhi Indian Cuisine, or as the locals call it “Gandhi Roti”, is unwavering despite the competition and thankfully, there’s no sign of it disappearing soon.

Gandhi Indian Cuisine. Gandhi Roti. List of Best East Indian in Toronto

Its bright yellow shopfront draws my attention every time. I happened to be in the area today, and decided to visit Gandhi Roti again.

Gandhi Indian Cuisine. Gandhi Roti. List of Best East Indian in Toronto

The main attraction here is roti (bread), hence Gandhi Roti. Each roti and curry is made to order, so plan on waiting in line. Luckily for me, I got in around 5pm so it wasn’t busy and received my chicken tikka masala roti within 5 minutes.

I got the best seat in the house - the only window seat. There are only 3 tables in the tiny restaurant, and I counted 11 chairs, but really 3 of those chairs are for people waiting for their take-outs. (𝙅𝙠 : Toronto is a treasure trove of such hole in the wall, bare bones, small greasy diners serving authentic ethnic food.)

At Gandhi Roti, you get to choose a curry of your liking and it comes encased in warm flatbread. I describe it as a spicy pillow.

Oh, do I mean spicy. When the friendly lady at the counter took my order, she asked what spice level I wanted. The conversation went like this 🗨

Lady 🗨 What spice level do you want?

Me 🗨 Oh spicy.

Lady 🗨 Mild, Medium or Hot?

Me 🗨 Hot!

Lady 🗨 I think medium is good. Because hot is really hot.

Me 🗨 Oh okay then, medium! (𝙅𝙠 : What happened to that girl who enjoyed her first spicy mee siam at 2 years old? )

I’m not sure what she saw in me, but she saw right through me and gave me the best recommendation. On a regular day, I eat raw bird’s eye chilies or chili padi neat with almost every meal. So I thought that I can handle “Hot”. Thankfully I listened to her advice as “medium” was already giving me sweats and sniffles.

Gandhi Indian Cuisine. Gandhi Roti. List of Best East Indian in Toronto

The roti folds were very thin, slightly charred outside, a little bit chewy, and was the perfect envelope for the spicy, oozy curry. Every mouthful had the perfect ratio of roti to curry.

Gandhi Indian Cuisine. Gandhi Roti. List of Best East Indian in Toronto

Because each roti and curry is made to order, my food came piping hot and even to the last bite, I could see steamy puffs rising up to fill the whole restaurant with the aroma of curry.

Even with so much heat, I tasted deep flavours in the curry. My chicken tikka masala was very red in colour with large chunks of tender chicken breast, creamy potatoes, and soft onions. I really enjoyed this curry.

The chef is very generous and the portion sizes here are sufficient to feed one to two hungry adults. In fact, the table next to me, two men, shared one roti. I ate one on my own 😛

Don’t judge me 😂

It's really nice lah.

Eating this reminded me of murtabuk. I used to frequent Mamak (Indian Muslim) stalls as a little girl growing up in Malaysia and Singapore. So to taste today’s roti, made me a little home sick. I’ll be back to try Gandhi Roti's paneer roti.

Original Prawn Vadai @ Haig Best Briyani & Kebabs, Singapore

Arrived a little too early at Haig Road Hawker Centre for a makan session. Meanwhile, tummy needed to be kept entertained before the main event. I recalled that KF Seetoh of Makansutra wrote about Original Recipe Prawn Vadai stall a few days before. I have always loved vadai as a tasty snack with teh tarik, so it once again came to my rescue.

Original Prawn Vadai @ Haig Best Briyani & Kebabs, Singapore

$1 each, each vadai comes with a good size prawn with shell and head intact (bigger than my pinkie). The vadai has a hole in the middle like a doughnut. It is freshly deep fried till crisp and reddish brown outside.

Original Recipe Prawn Vadai @ Haig Best Briyani & Kebabs, Singapore

This form of "Singapore vadai" first appeared around Farrer Park in the 1950s. Haig Best Briyani & Kebabs stall owner Stephen Suriyah's mum Madam Jamuna Rani (Auntie Rani) started selling her own version of "Singapore vadai" at pasar malam stalls in the 1990s. It was a big hit at the night markets and has a loyal following. Just this month, Stephen opened his stall at Haig Road hawker centre serving his mum's Original Recipe Prawn Vadai as well as briyani & kebabs. (Source: Makansutra.)

I bought one to try (remembering Warren Buffett's sagely advice "Never test water with both feet.")

Original Prawn Vadai @ Haig Best Briyani & Kebabs, Singapore

The freshly deep fried vadai felt rather greasy even when hot. But, I love the texture - it was gently crisp outside while the inside was spongy, puffy and airy with air pockets (unlike most vadai which are quite dense inside).

The light fluffy spongy dough was savoury with subtle spice flavour, and sweetness from the prawn. The prawn was fried till crisp outside but the stiff shell kept the meat moist and juicy. I ate the crispy prawn whole with head and shell.

Original Prawn Vadai @ Haig Best Briyani & Kebabs, Singapore

The raw green chili pepper provided fleeting sharp spicy heat and juicy crunch to complement the spongy airy vadai.

Original Recipe Prawn Vadai @ Haig Best Briyani & Kebabs, Singapore

One was good, so two is better. My tummy was more than happy. The best vadai that I've had so far.
